I hold a lot of certifications earned across a long stretch of time, which means I had a front-row seat as the whole certification landscape was rebuilt over the last decade. If you're deciding what to study now, it helps to understand how much the ground moved — because the lesson in that movement is more useful than any single credential.

1. Microsoft's great re-platforming

Microsoft made the most dramatic change. From September 2018 it pivoted to role-based certifications, then on 31 January 2021 retired the entire MCSA, MCSD and MCSE line that had defined Microsoft credentials for two decades. Overnight, "I'm an MCSE" went from a current statement to a historical one. It was jarring — and it was the right call, because the old exams tested product features while the new ones test what a person in a role actually does. I hold both eras, and the transition taught me not to over-identify with any particular set of letters.

2. Cisco's consolidation (2020)

Cisco followed a similar logic on 24 February 2020, collapsing a sprawling set of roughly ten separate CCNA tracks into a single, broader CCNA, restructuring CCNP and CCIE, adding a layer of Specialist certifications, and launching DevNet to certify network automation skills. The message was clear: networking was no longer a collection of narrow silos but a broader discipline that now included programmability. The old "which CCNA?" question simply disappeared.

3. PMP's agile turn (2021)

On 2 January 2021 PMI rebuilt the PMP exam, reducing the old five domains to three and weighting roughly half the content toward agile and hybrid approaches. For a credential synonymous with plan-driven management, that was a statement: the profession had accepted that predictive-only was no longer the default. Anyone studying PMP today is studying a genuinely hybrid qualification, which is a very different thing from the PMP of ten years ago.

4. ITIL 4 (2019)

Service management modernised too. ITIL 4, released in February 2019, was the first major overhaul since 2007 and deliberately embraced agile, lean and DevOps — recasting rigid processes as flexible practices centred on value and flow. It kept what still worked about ITIL's discipline while shedding the reputation for bureaucracy that had made younger engineers dismiss it.

5. The digital-badge era

Quietly, the proof changed as much as the exams. Verifiable digital badges — the kind you can share on a profile and anyone can validate in a click — became the norm across issuers. A certification stopped being a PDF in a drawer and became a live, tamper-evident credential. That's a genuine improvement: it makes credentials portable, checkable and harder to fake, which is good for everyone who actually earned theirs.

6. What it means for building a stack now

The decade's real lesson isn't any single change — it's that every framework will be rebuilt underneath you, and that's fine. So build for it:

  • Certify behind your curiosity, not your ego. Chase the subject, not the letters; the letters will change.
  • Learn the model, not the interface. The MCSE fundamentals carried into Azure; the CCNA fundamentals carried into SASE. Understanding is the durable asset.
  • Keep the current credential current, and let the outdated ones be history without shame. A retired certification isn't a failure; it's a timestamp on a real thing you learned.
